In this comprehensive review, our goals are to (1) shed light into the gaps in knowledge and evidence regarding the potential use of stem cells for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and (2) provide an overview of the knowledge that is currently available and concerns that have been raised regarding this topic.

Stem cells are undifferentiated or partly differentiated cells that have the capacity to self-renew and develop into more specialised cell types [16]. This ability is what distinguishes stem cells from other cell types. According to the number of cell lines in which they could be differentiated, stem cells are typically categorised as totipotent (for example, zygote), pluripotent (for example, embryonic stem cells (ESCs)), multipotent (for example, hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)), or unipotent [17]. When a stem cell divides into two daughter cells, the daughter cells have the potential to either continue to exist as stem cells or to develop into a specialised cell type, such as cells that make up muscle or nerve tissue [18]. Their environment supports the stem cells and interacts with them, affecting their transformation into specialised cell types and promoting their ability to self-renew [19]. This environment also has an effect on their capacity for cell division, differentiation, and the regeneration of damaged or diseased tissue. The production of a large number of growth factors, known as paracrine activity, and/or the migration of stem cells to the site of an injury, in conjunction with cell contact and cellular differentiation, are what allow stem cells to exert their restorative effects [20]. In recent years, stem cell therapy has been proposed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). There have also been published clinical trials that make use of stem cells, and the findings of these research have been promising [21,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43]. Concerning the clinical use of stem cells, some of the questions that need to be answered include the kind of stem cells to be used, the technique of production, the ideal amount of stem cells, and the mode of administration.
Stem Cell Delivery
There has been discussion and research on a variety of approaches to the delivery of stem cells. To be more specific, documented preclinical works have studied the impact of both intraperitoneal and intravenous injections, and the results of these studies have revealed that intravenous injection is more effective in increasing erectile function [44,45,46]. Additionally, periprostatic implantation has been carried out in other studies Stem Cell Therapy India, and the findings have shown that it is just as effective as an intracavernosal injection [47,48]. In most cases, a direct injection into the organ of concern has been carried out, as well as suggested by a number of studies [21,35,38]. In the clinical investigations that have been completed and published up to this point, the types of stem cells that have been used include placenta-derived stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, bone marrow-derived stem cells, and umbilical cord stem cells [21,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43]. When it comes to the preparations, there have been two primary approaches that have been used to get stem cells ready.
